The photograph above is of the homestead of Ella’s parents in Ogemaw County, Michigan.
Ella came to live with our family in 1939 when she was 18, (I was 4), so that she could live in town and attend County Normal college to become a country school teacher. Her Dad and Mother and siblings were hard working farmers. When asked why their barn was so big and the house was so small, Ted would answer, “A barn can build a house but a house can’t build a barn.” There’s a lot of truth in that saying…hope you enjoy Ella’s recipe.
2 C. Graham Cracker crumbs
1 Cup Chopped Pecans
1/2 Cup Melted Butter
1 tsp Vanilla
1 3 oz pkg Cream Cheese (1 8oz pkg. (same)
2 tbsp Sugar
1 Cup Cream (whipped)
1 Cup Powdered Sugar
2 tbsp Milk
1 Can Cherry Pie Filling
1/2 tsp. Almond flavoring
Combine crumbs and butter, press into 8 inch square cake pan.
Beat sugar and cheese and milk until smooth.
Spread over crust.
Then spread cherry mix over crust.
Top with pecans.
Fold vanilla and sugar into cream with almond flavoring.
Pour over all. Chill overnight.
